BOB’S_DATABASE

Applications running on and over the Internet have three major disadvantages, which are relevant to customers and users, in comparison with high-end client/server applications, like SAP R/3, Oracle Applications, SSA ERP LN 6.1, etc.:

  • Line speed of Internet cannot be controlled and maintained at a high throughput rate the entire time.
  • The database access and response time is controlled by the database vendor and is hardly to be influenced and optimized for BOB’S_WORLD by the database vendor, respectively.
  • The standard browsers (Internet Explorer, etc.) are changed and updated at very short cycles.

In this section we discuss BOB’S_DATABASE. The other sections are discussed in Environment and BOB’S_BROWSER.

BOB’S_WORLD runs under all major SQL-based, relational databases of today, like Oracle, MS SQL-Server, DB2, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Firebird, etc. BOB’S_WORLD is more or less independent of the database since there is a database layer to access data for BOB’S_WORLD applications. If new SQL-based, relational databases come up, the database layer will be expanded accordingly.

The intention of BOB’S_WORLD company is to give best performance to companies using BOB’S_WORLD. Therefore, a decision had to be made about the major target database to be used. The selection criteria were price, performance, usability, handling, maintenance, and open for optimization.
